Lower School

Kindergarten — 4th Grade

The Lower School Program strives to give the students in the elementary years the basic building blocks, systematically laying a foundation for more advanced study. Teachers strive to nurture the whole child, tending to the development of both the strengths and the challenges of each child. Recognizing the social/emotional growth of a child is of equal importance to academic growth.

Teachers teach what they love and foster the learning process so that children develop a love of learning and the skills to become life-long learners. We also emphasize mindfulness, self-motivation, creativity, self-discipline, self-reliance, responsibility. Our faculty use the Responsive Classroom (www.responsiveclassroom.org) as a foundation of their teaching spaces, forming an interactive community in their classrooms. This happens through morning meetings, establishing class guidelines, and expressing hopes and dreams, among other practices.
