| | History of The Well School The Well School was founded 45 years ago by Jay and Toni Garland as an alternative to public education. Since its humble beginnings in 1967 the school has taken a holistic approach to a classical based curriculum, providing excellence in academics and the arts, with an emphasis on nurturing the whole child: the mind, body and spirit.
The Well began with a tiny group of students, principally made up of the Garlands’ children, nieces and nephews. The children were taught in the Garland home (often referred to as the ‘Brick Building’) where Jay and Toni’s family also resided. Over the past 40 years much of the land was cleared and a full campus built on 70 acres of land, including several school buildings, a performing arts theater, a community kitchen, many playing fields and sports facilities, a nature pond, and a 15 acre farm.
Today The Well serves students from Amherst, Milford, Temple, Keene, Dublin, Hancock, Jaffrey, Rindge, New Ipswich, Peterborough, Greenfield, Francestown, Antrim, Lyndeborough, and other surrounding towns throughout the Monadnock Region and North Central Massachusetts.
