Building a Library
2/19/2010
This third grade class participated in the "Pennies for Peace" program (Greg Mortenson's project to build schools in Afghanistan). The experience was so rewarding for them that last year they asked second grade teacher, Elizabeth Marble, to let them participate in another project. Wanting to recognize the diversity in their own class, they came up with the idea to honor classmate Hieu Turner, by building a library in Vietnamese village were Hieu was born.

Last spring found the second grade in a massive 50 day, reading marathon. By April they had raised over $4,000 toward their goal of $7,500 to build a library. "My goal was to get the kids to read as much as possible," said Elizabeth. "I didn't set up the program to reward the kids for the number of books they read, but the hours they spent reading instead." This was important to Elizabeth as so much of second grade is spent reinforcing reading skills.

Their hard work certainly paid off for the class. This winter it was announced the non-profit Library of Vietnam Project would be building The Well School Second Grade Library within the community center in Dong An Village.

Now in third grade, the class continues its outreach.  What will they do next? Something fabulous to be sure!

Service Learning Around The Well School

In Kindergarten, service learning is interwoven into the rhythm of the school year. Our Kindergarten and first graders work along side their grand friends at the Scott Farrar home making Valentines for troops serving overseas, while our sixth graders look for ways to earn the funds to purchase a mobile defibrillator (see next story).

Service learning at The Well School is often student driven, as in the case of the 8th graders making scarves to sell at Winter Fun day with 1/2 the proceeds to go to Haiti relief efforts or, as seen by the current third grade efforts to build a library in Viet Nam.

The Well School Celebrates the Winter Holidays

Peterborough, NH:
Wreath making, doll-making, and learning to make potato latkes in time for Hanukah, were some of the activities that occupied Well School students and their grandfamilies at The Well School’s Grandparent / Multi-Cultural Craft Day.

Grandparents came from all six New England states to join their grandchildren in making multi-cultural crafts for the winter holidays. Diwali. Hanukah, and Christmas traditions were honored by most of the school’s 130 students and their grandparents.

The school’s elementary students rotated through a variety of age appropriate craft projects while the middle school students worked on longer, more involved projects such as lantern making and whittling. The afternoon concluded with singers from the middle school chorus entertaining the participants by singing in Hebrew, Spanish, and Latin!

Be Net Safe - Internet Safety Talk
11/19/2009
On Thursday, November 12th, Peter La Monica from New Hampshire based nonprofit BeNetSafe.org met with two groups of students to discuss Internet safety. The 4th through 6th graders learned Internet safety rules such as only going on the computer when a trusted adult is present and how to spot SPAM.

The 7th and 8th graders also learned how to keep themselves safe of line, by using the basic question, "Would you want your family to read/see this?"

At The Well School, our lower school classrooms are technology free. We teach our students to use a library and books for research. Our upper school students learn to type in 5th grade, and by 6th grade may use teacher approved websites for research.

After your family has decided whether or not you will allow the Internet in your home, you may want to learn how to explore the Internet safely with your child. If so, speak with your child's teacher who can help you with tips and tools that reinforce Internet safety habits.

Thank you to Peter La Monica and Kristin Garland for organizing the event.

Each member of the class received a personally designed diploma to reflect the student's individual accomplishments while at The Well School. 3rd and 4th Graders Contribute to "Project Linus"
6/2/2008
Did you know there's an organization that provides hand crafted blankets and afghans to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need?  Every blanket or afghan donated to the project is made by volunteers. Two of the more recent donations to the local Monadnock chapter of the "Linus Project" came from Well School students.

Handwork students in 3rd grade learn to crotchet squares which are then pieced together to form an afghan. Last years' 3rd grade completed afghan was on display at the top of the stairs. Handwork teacher, Agneta Brown, donated both the 2007 and 2008 afghans this spring, leaving the students feeling proud of their work and good about their contribution to those in need.

THE WELL SCHOOL SET TO BEGIN 40TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR
8/22/2007
The Well School is prepared to start its 40th year educating area students. Since 1967 the school has built upon its founding guidelines of building a community of learners that emphasizes the development of the whole child including intellectual, artistic, social physical, and emotional. Currently the school enrolls 108 students from Southern New Hampshire and North Central Massachusetts. This year, the school will celebrate turning forty with special events throughout the school year.
“This is an exciting milestone for our school and its community,” commented The Well School's director. “Our organization is aging in an exceptionally healthy way. We have been able to remain intentionally small, so that each child can be cared for individually, while offering outstanding academic and arts programs,” he added.

The school, located on Middle Hancock Road invites all alumni and former parents back to campus for school events and a reunion planned for graduation weekend. The Well School seeks the involvement of its alumni in building relations and supporting outreach efforts on behalf of the School. Alumni volunteers can get involved with alumni phonathons, as class agents, hosting events, or special interest projects. Former students and parents can update the school with their email and home information on line at the school’s recently updated website, www.wellschool.org.

The Well School can be found on the web at www.wellschool.org. Limited openings remain available for the 2007/2008 school year.
